Solana node questions

How long until my node is ready?

Ready within 24 hours of payment, usually sooner. Your dashboard shows the progress, and we update you there and in your support tickets once the server is live.

Is this a Solana RPC node?

No. This is a validator: it votes on blocks and can earn rewards, and you get nothing to connect an app to. We monitor it around the clock and keep you updated through your account and support tickets. We do not sell a Solana RPC node. Anza, the team behind the Agave software, also advises against running one node as both a validator and a full RPC node.

Which keys do you hold?

Your validator runs with two hot keys on the server: the identity key and the vote-signing key (the authorized voter). Your authorized withdrawer key stays offline with you and never reaches us. It controls your vote account, your commission and your withdrawals, and Anza's vote account guide says it should never be stored on the server. If you lose it, you lose control of the vote account, so back it up.

What does it cost to vote?

Your validator pays vote fees from its identity account, and you fund that account with your own SOL. The Alpenglow proposal text (SIMD-0326, in the solana-foundation/solana-improvement-documents repository on GitHub) says validators pay about 1 SOL a day in vote fees. That is an estimate, and the real number depends on how many slots your validator votes on. Alpenglow is a proposal, not live, so plan with today's rules. We make no claim about rewards or profit.

Who gets the rewards and commission?

You do. Anza's vote account guide shows your commission share paid into your vote account in the first block of the next epoch. You withdraw it with your withdrawer key. We never touch it.

Will I get stake from the Solana Foundation?

Hosting does not guarantee any stake. The Solana Foundation Delegation Program (solana.org/delegation-program) is run by the Foundation. It asks you to pass KYC and meet its performance criteria, and its rules change from epoch to epoch. Read them before you plan around it.

How long until it is voting, and who does the upkeep?

A new validator starts from a snapshot and has to catch up with the network. That usually takes minutes to a few hours once the node is set up. We handle software upgrades, restarts outside your leader slots, monitoring and alerts. You top up the identity account.
